How to stay well from 9-5!
Hi Health Fam!
Today I want to talk to all of my cubicle warriors out there! Even if you don't work in an office environment, these tips will be great for anyone that works at a desk, works with a computer, or sits for most of the day.
1. Take a walk!
"Sitting is the new smoking."
I don't know if you've heard this, but sitting for long periods of time without movement breaks may be just as detrimental to your health as smoking. That's why one of my biggest and most valuable tips is to get up and take a walk! I recommend five minutes of walking per hour.
2. Take the stairs!
Do you have any stairs in your building? If so, try to take the stairs to and from your floor instead of the elevator. For workers in very tall buildings, this may not be an option. However, that doesn't stop you from walking up a few floors on your lunch break and taking the elevator down! You should shoot for climbing at least ten flights of stairs per day.
3. Set your monitor at the right height for you!
I have covered "text neck" and "tech neck" here before, but it's so important that it certainly bears repeating. The top of the monitor should be no higher than your eyes when you're sitting upright. Your keyboard should be directly in front of your monitor.
4. Workout at Work!
Believe it or not, almost everyone can get a workout in at your desk. All you need is your body and a chair! Our friends over at Tiny Pulse have put together eight exercises you can do right from the comfort of your own office chair. Click here to check those out.
5. Make it a Date!
We all know that we're better at doing things when we have an accountability partner. If you'd like to commit to walking on your lunch break, why don't you try to find a friend who will walk with you? It makes it a lot easier, and that way you don't have to sacrifice your socializing to stay fit!
Yours in health,
Dr. William
